Cancún - Cancún

Cancún è una popolare destinazione turistica caraibica sulla punta nord-est di Messicodella penisola dello Yucatan, in Quintana Roo, che è anche chiamato i Caraibi messicani. Accanto a 22 km (14 miglia) di spiagge, troverai un'ampia varietà di resort, spa, club e centri commerciali.

Adagiata all'angolo nord-est dei Caraibi messicani, Cancún, oggi una città di oltre 700.000 abitanti, letteralmente non esisteva prima degli anni '70. Era un progetto turistico avviato in quel momento dal governo messicano in una zona scarsamente abitata e incontaminata. Da allora è cresciuta fino a diventare una grande città e una delle principali destinazioni balneari del mondo.

È composto da quattordici miglia di spiagge bianche incontaminate a forma di numero "7", sede delle meraviglie archeologiche Maya, dei mari turchesi, di un ricco mondo sottomarino e di servizi per le vacanze di livello mondiale. È ancora considerata la porta del mondo Maya ("El Mundo Maya"). Templi Maya e siti rituali sono ovunque, alcuni soffocati da una giungla lussureggiante, altri facilmente accessibili.

Cancun è costituito da due aree molto distinte e separate. Uno di questi è l'Hotel Zone, interamente costruito attorno all'industria turistica. Abbonda di mega hotel all-inclusive con splendide spiagge caraibiche. Resta qui solo se non ti dispiace trascorrere le tue vacanze con molti altri turisti. Il centro di Cancún, al contrario, è una pura città messicana, anche se ha strade molto larghe progettate per le auto, nessun vero centro di cui parlare, e nel complesso è abbastanza insignificante, data la sua mancanza di storia prima degli anni '70. Non aspettarti di vedere la cultura storica messicana qui; invece, è il Messico moderno con molti ristoranti, catene di fast food nordamericani, centri commerciali, mercati e club.

Sfortunatamente, anche il centro della città non ha accesso alla spiaggia. Per questo motivo Cancun è una città molto turistica, con turisti e bellissime spiagge completamente separate dai veri cancunesi. Se trovi questa configurazione poco attraente, dovresti probabilmente saltare del tutto Cancun e andare su Playa del Carmen o Puerto Vallarta invece, dove i locali e le spiagge si trovano nella stessa zona.

Coloro che cercano principalmente spiagge e immersioni subacquee, o che sono un po' avventurosi, possono facilmente trovare camere su spiagge altrettanto belle e meno affollate lungo la costa a solo un'ora o due a sud di Cancún. Alcune abilità di lingua spagnola possono aiutare a trovare offerte migliori. È possibile noleggiare un'auto o prendere l'autobus per Puerto Morelos (circa 20 minuti) o Tulum (1 ora). Coloro che cercano una base operativa che desiderano hotel buoni o di lusso e i vantaggi della vita urbana ma preferiscono un sapore più locale, potrebbero voler soggiornare nella principale città dello Yucatan di Merida. Nota: alcune delle compagnie aeree di cui sopra operano stagionalmente, di solito durante i mesi invernali nell'emisfero settentrionale, o come charter, mentre altre operano più regolarmente durante tutto l'anno. I voli charter vengono generalmente prenotati tramite un tour operator o un'agenzia di viaggi e non direttamente tramite la compagnia aerea. La parte più difficile del viaggio verso Cancún (a parte il check-in in aeroporto) è andare dal nastro trasportatore al trasporto. Assicurati di sapere chi è il tuo trasporto (in caso di prenotazione anticipata) e trovali all'esterno, poiché è lì che saranno. Per allontanarti dall'aeroporto di Cancun, cammina fino all'estremità dell'edificio principale oltre gli arrivi nazionali. Se hai acquistato servizi navetta tramite prenotazione online e non trovi il tuo autista, chiama tu stesso il servizio clienti; non fidarti delle persone locali che affermano di essere dipendenti dell'aeroporto che cercano di "aiutarti" (di solito i dipendenti dell'aeroporto aspettano che tu venga da loro, e non viceversa). I conducenti legittimi (e i loro rappresentanti) per queste compagnie di navetta sono fuori dall'edificio, fuori dalle porte a vetri dell'uscita, verso i loro veicoli.

L'aeroporto ha costruito una recinzione metallica appena fuori dagli arrivi internazionali. È consentito l'ingresso solo al personale dell'aeroporto e ai dipendenti delle navette e degli agenti di viaggio autorizzati (devono strisciare un badge). Se incontri qualcuno che arriverà, chiedi loro di lasciare quella zona e camminare verso l'aeroporto per incontrare il loro gruppo.

ADO è il principale vettore di autobus interurbani a lunga distanza nella penisola dello Yucatan. Offrono un servizio regolare di autobus da tutti i terminal al centro di Cancun ea Playa del Carmen. Al Terminal 1, la fermata dell'autobus è alla tua sinistra quando esci dal terminal. La "stazione degli autobus dell'aeroporto" si trova nel parcheggio degli autobus fuori dalle porte degli arrivi nazionali al Terminal 2. Per gli arrivi internazionali, gira a destra, dopo essere uscito dall'edificio e attraversa l'altro lato dell'edificio. Al Terminal 3 svoltare a destra dall'esterno delle porte degli arrivi e superare la capanna "Air Margaritaville" (precedentemente "Coconuts Welcome Bar").

Inoltre se vuoi viaggiare direttamente da Cancún a Cozumel c'è una compagnia aerea chiamata MAYAir e AeroTucan dal terminal FBO, vicino al Terminal 3 per consentirti di volare direttamente attraverso Cancún a Cozumel. Altrimenti puoi anche utilizzare l'autobus ADO o una navetta condivisa per Playa del Carmen e prendi il traghetto per Cozumel, poiché il terminal dei traghetti è vicino alla stazione degli autobus di Playa del Carmen.

Assicurati di passare la dogana prima di cercare il cambio valuta - ad esempio all'interno della zona doganale di Cancún offrono tariffe molto più basse di quelle richieste anche dai venditori ambulanti più avidi.

Attenzione a lasciare il Messico con abbastanza soldi. Il governo messicano addebita una tassa di viaggio di circa M$900 (US$45) per lasciare il paese dall'aeroporto. La maggior parte delle principali compagnie aeree potrebbe già avere la tassa di viaggio addebitata al prezzo del biglietto, anche se si consiglia vivamente ai viaggiatori di verificarla prima di partire per/da Cancún. L'attuale esperienza di viaggio collettivo (da TripAdvisor) mostra che quasi tutte le compagnie aeree che volano dagli Stati Uniti hanno già incluso questa tassa nella loro tariffa aerea, quindi non è necessario pagare di nuovo quando si lascia Cancún. Sembra che solo i voli charter dal Regno Unito non includano questa tassa e i viaggiatori del Regno Unito potrebbero dover pagare alla partenza.

Fai anche attenzione a non passare troppo presto dai controlli di sicurezza. I prezzi di cibo e bevande quasi il doppio (US $ 4 per 1/2 litro d'acqua) e non puoi facilmente tornare indietro. Non c'è Wi-Fi gratuito. Il Terminal 1 è dovuto ai suoi collegamenti per lo più domestici a prezzi più ragionevoli.

La Carretera Cancun-Tulum/Av Tulum (Autostrada federale 307) è la principale autostrada nord-sud che inizia all'incrocio con Av Lopez Portillo (Autostrada federale 180), a nord del centro. Da qui questa autostrada collega Cancun all'aeroporto, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum e infine a Chetumal vicino al confine con il Belize. La Fed Hwy 180/180D va da est a ovest come Av Lopez Portillo e attraversa la penisola dello Yucatan fino a Merida e si snoda verso Campeche e Villahermosa lungo la costa del Golfo. Fed Hwy 180D, a ovest della città diventa un'autostrada a pedaggio tra Cancun e Merida con accesso limitato mentre Fed Hwy 180 (la vecchia autostrada a due corsie o "carretera libre") corre parallela alla Hwy 180D, collegando varie città con i dossi (topes) per rallentare il traffico che attraversa la città. Le auto noleggiate in Messico non possono essere guidate legalmente in America Centrale.

Ci sono anche agenzie di viaggio e noleggio auto allineate lungo Blvd Kukulcan nella zona degli hotel e in altre aree del centro. Si trovano in edifici indipendenti e all'interno dei centri commerciali per i viaggiatori che intendono fare una gita di un giorno, fare shopping per tour e attività o prenotare un viaggio di andata verso la prossima destinazione. Le auto noleggiate dalla zona degli hotel o dal centro possono essere meno costose rispetto all'aeroporto e possono essere prese per un periodo di tempo più breve quando è necessaria l'auto. Con il bus

di Cancun 2 stazione degli autobus è in posizione centrale nel centro di Cancun, a nord-ovest della rotatoria di Av Uxmal e Av Tulum. Da qui ci sono autobus frequenti per l'aeroporto (30min), Playa del Carmen (1 ora 20 minuti), Tulum, Merida (4 ore), Valladolid (2 ore), Campeche (6h 45min) e Chetumal (5-6 ore) nella penisola dello Yucatan. Ci sono servizi meno frequenti (una o due volte al giorno) verso luoghi più lontani come Palenque (13 ore), Tuxtla Gutierrez (18-20 ore); San Cristóbal de las Casas (18-19 ore); Villahermosa (12-13 ore), Città del Messico (26 ore) e altrove nella Repubblica.

La stazione è servita da una fermata dei taxi di fronte alla stazione lungo Pino. Gli autobus locali per la zona alberghiera passano regolarmente dietro la stazione in Tulum Avenue. Le seguenti linee di autobus offrono servizi in entrata e in uscita dal terminal centrale degli autobus:

Cancún è molto facile da navigare. A sud c'è l'aeroporto, a nord la città e in mezzo nel tratto di terra tra il mare e la laguna di Nichupte ci sono tutti gli hotel, le spiagge e i bar, indicati come la zona alberghiera o Zona Hotelera. Il centro è dove vive la maggior parte dei residenti e si estende sulla terraferma dietro la laguna.

Gli indirizzi nella città principale (centro città) sono organizzati da Super Manzanas (SM) o 'Super Blocks' che consiste in diversi blocchi o Manzanas (Mz) contenuti all'interno. Gli SM sono separati da strade/viali più ampi e trafficati (di solito denominati) su tutti i lati mentre i Manzanas (Mz) sono separati da strade laterali più strette e più piccole all'interno di un SM (possono essere numerati o nominati). Sulle mappe le strade principali formano diverse forme uniche che di solito sono le Super Manzanas. Su Isla Cancún (Zona Hotelera) gli indirizzi si basano su quanti chilometri (Km) lungo Blvd Kukulkan dal Km 0 (un parcheggio) all'incrocio tra Blvd Kukulkan e Av Bonampak. Man mano che si viaggia verso est da Av Bonampak verso Punta Cancun (Km 9) e verso sud attraverso Isla Cancun (Zona Hotelera) lungo Blvd Kukulkan il numero di Km aumenta e culmina al Km 25,3 (Riviera Cancun Golf & Resorts) a sud di Punta Nizuc. Blvd Kulkakun diventa 'Carretera Punta Nizuc-Cancun' che va a est verso l'aeroporto sulla terraferma. Venendo dall'aeroporto, i taxi e le navette seguono tipicamente 'Carretera Punta Nizuc-Cancun' per raggiungere la Zona degli Hotel via Punta Nizuc al Km 25 e dirigersi verso nord. Le principali autostrade che attraversano la città sono Av Tulum (Hwy 307) che va da nord a sud e Av Portillo (Hwy 180) che va in diagonale tra sud-ovest e nord-est. Entrambe le strade si intersecano al Parque Crucero verso l'estremità nord della città.

Con il bus

L'autobus è il mezzo preferito per spostarsi. Gli autobus sono economici e vengono spesso. La maggior parte degli autisti di autobus è molto cortese e si fermerà per te anche se non stai aspettando alla fermata dell'autobus. La maggior parte dei percorsi va su e giù per l'arteria principale, Blvd Kukulcan, dal nome del serpente piumato che è la principale divinità Maya, dalle parole Maya kukul (uccello) e può (serpente). Gli autobus passano costantemente, ma preparati a un viaggio possibilmente angusto e accidentato.

Dopo aver pagato la tariffa, che è a persona, l'autista ti consegnerà un biglietto/scontrino che di solito viene stampato con pubblicità che non serve come trasferimento su un altro autobus. Le tariffe sono di solito M $ 10 (2019) destinazioni all'interno della città, mentre un biglietto per qualsiasi punto della Zona Hotelera costa M $ 12 (2019). I taxi sono molti, un po' cari per la zona alberghiera e l'aeroporto, ma economici nel centro della città. Le tariffe per la zona alberghiera dipendono da quanto lungo il Blvd Kukulcan vuoi andare (tariffe disponibili presso le reception degli hotel e i centri commerciali), mentre all'interno del centro c'è una tariffa fissa generale di circa M$25 per viaggio all'interno del centro e M$70- 110 in altra zona fuori dal centro. La tariffa del taxi per la zona alberghiera dal centro è di ~M$180. È meglio chiedere all'autista al momento dell'imbarco per evitare malintesi. Di gran lunga, il miglior mezzo di trasporto per la zona alberghiera è l'autobus. Il biglietto dell'autobus è economico e il tragitto dal punto A al punto B non richiede molto tempo. Tuttavia, i tassisti non rilasciano ricevute anche se le richiedi.

Stai attento e chiaro con il tuo taxista. Hanno fissato le tariffe su carta per quanto dovrebbero addebitare il viaggio per chilometro (senza metro). Puoi anche ottenere uno sconto del 10% circa se lo chiedi. Se stai dividendo un taxi con gli amici, sii chiaro sul numero di servizi, persone e prezzo che addebiterà per la tua destinazione. Un "servizio" è considerato da un punto di partenza a un punto di arresto richiesto. Se il tuo taxista non collabora, ci sono circa 10 taxi in più dietro ogni angolo.

I taxi urbani sono bianchi con una singola striscia orizzontale verde su ciascun lato del veicolo. Possono fornire corse all'interno della città e per l'aeroporto, ma non possono prelevare passeggeri all'aeroporto. I taxi di diverse combinazioni di colori provengono solitamente da altri comuni che non possono trasportare passeggeri a livello locale. Possono far scendere solo passeggeri provenienti da un'altra città o paese (comune).

In macchina

Fai molta attenzione se scegli di guidare a Cancún. La polizia sembra attirare i turisti in un baleno durante le vacanze di primavera. Quando ritiri un noleggio, controlla che tutte le luci funzionino. Inoltre, quando vieni fermato per una leggera violazione, non sorprenderti se la polizia tende una mano con il palmo aperto, mentre tiene in ostaggio la tua patente di guida nell'altra. Quando fai shopping a Cancún, puoi andare nel centro della città o nella zona degli hotel. Il centro è molto più economico, ma la zona degli hotel ha prodotti di marca.

  • Atotonilco, Xel-ha 107 (in Mercado 28 downtown Cancún) (right across from El Cejas). 08:00-18:09. An extremely good sampling of Mexican food from all around the country. Excellent value. Nothing fancy but a gastronomical delight. Try the "Huevos Motuleños". US$4-10. 
  • 1 Pescaditos, Ave Yaxchilán 69 (close to corner of Marañón), ☏ 52 998 884 0305. Really nice and laid back seafood restaurant where everything's deep fried. Try the chiles rellenos, possibly the best ones in Cancún. 
  • Los de Pescados, Ave Tulum, ☏ 52 998 884 1146. Very simple Ttco (specialising in seafood) restaurant. Fish tacos- a few pieces of fried fish with some tortillas and you put your own sauces and condiments on. About M$22 for a taco and M$25 for an ice cold beer. 
  • Restaurante Natura, Boulevard Kukulcan km 9.5 (Zona Hotelera), ☏ 52 998 883 0585. 07:30-23:00. Natura is the only healthy choice restaurant to be found in the hotel zone of Cancún. Fit for Vegetarians and non vegetarians. Over 20 choices of fresh made juices and salads. Service fast and friendly, very clean place and inexpensive. Highly recommended to anyone looking to eat or enjoy some drinks outside in Cancún. 
  • Los Tarascos, Av. Tulum 4, ☏ 52 998 884 8707. 16.30-03.00. Classic Mexican taqueria specializing in tacos al pastor. Very popular with the locals, quite tasty and at a fair price. (updated Feb 2019)

Bere

Cancún's nightlife is unlike any other destination on Earth. For some, a day in Cancún doesn't start until tasks like an 11:00 breakfast, nap on the beach, and siesta are arduously completed. This is your place to shine.

Il legal drinking age in Mexico is 18, but it is not strongly enforced.

Hotel Zone

The Hotel Zone is a huge venue and gets top entertainers and DJs. Don't be surprised to see Vegas like shows spontaneously erupt while you are sipping your piña colada. These clubs can charge large covers ranging from US$20–60 per person, though the cover can include an open bar.

You may find yourself dancing in a conga line, laughing your cares away and speaking whatever Español you managed to pickup. A must for the first timers, and always good fun for returners also. Coco Bongo's entertainment includes a show, complete with women swinging from the ceilings.

Most of the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) venues listed below are in Punta Cancun, between km 9 and 10, in the area surrounding Hotel Krystal, Cancun Convention Center and the Grand Fiesta Americana.

  • Señor Frogs, Blvd. Kukulkan km 9, Zona Hotelera, ☏ 52 998 883 3454. Señor Frog's is a restaurant by day and a dance club by night, and is one of the most popular spots for vacationers to visit. The restaurant opens up for lunch and serves international types of food such as pasta, chicken and pizza as well as Mexican cuisine all day until midnight. A cover charge of five dollars will get you into the party after 20:00 and includes a souvenir yard glass which you can then pay to get filled with your drink of choice. One of Señor Frog's famous attractions is the water slide that leads from the club out into the lagoon, just for a little bit of fun. As the evening progresses, Señor Frog's becomes less family friendly and more of a party establishment, waitresses will circulate, offering shots of tequila for a price. Waiters are also very "hands on", if you are not traveling in a family group, expect them to try to touch, hug, or kiss the female members of the party. 
  • 1 Dady'O, Blvd Kukulkan km 9.5, Zona Hotelera (across street from Coco Bongo), ☏ 52 998 883 3333. Dady'O has been known to host some of the world's top DJs, including Red Foo (LMFAO), Apl.De.App and Tiësto, features a casual atmosphere, laser shows, pole dancing go go girls and flashing dance floor opening shows. 
  • Coco Bongo, Blvd Kukulkan km 9.5 #30, Zona Hotelera (across street from Dady'O), ☏ 52 998 883 2373, numero verde: 1 800 841 4636. 22:30-05:00. A nightclub featuring a show that has been compared with Las Vegas. More than 50 professionals in scenery. Tickets can be bought online for US$75. If you don't mind waiting to get in exchangeable tickets can be bought from Oxxo for M$1000. US$75. 

Yaxchilan Avenue

Also try the clubs at Yaxchilan Avenue, located in downtown Cancún, where all the locals hang out.

  • Los 4 Elementos, Ave Yaxchilan 31 (Hotel Xbalamque), ☏ 52 998 255 9658. Try the live music bar Los 4 Elementos. They open and play live music from 23:00 until the last customer leaves. The music is great and prices are significantly lower than those found in the hotel zone clubs.

Dormire

Cancún has a large range of 3-5 star hotels in the "hotel zone" and some more economical hotels in the city center.

Note that several aging resorts located on and around Punta Cancún are now relying upon heavily discounted vacation packages or all-inclusive deals to fill rooms. They market themselves heavily as a great bargain to a wider audience. The result is that Punta Cancún is jam-packed with the revelers who can get rowdy and obnoxious. If you prefer to spend your vacations in a quieter and calmer setting, it may be worth it to splurge on a newer resort in the central or southern part of the Hotel Zone and further away from the "partying" crowds. Then you can save Punta for a brief day (or evening) trip for shopping, dining or entertainment.

Budget

Most of the "Budget" and some of the "mid-range" category hotels are located in and around downtown on the mainland. Many are also located within a reasonable walking distance or short taxi ride to the bus station on Av Uxmal and Av Tulum (Hwy 307) for those arriving late and/or leaving early. The area is reasonably safe at night. See "By bus" under "Get in" regarding getting in and out of Cancún by bus.

  • 1 Hostel Quetzal, Calle Orquideas 10, Mz 14, SM 22, ☏ 52 988 893 9821. A great hostel in downtown Cancún. Price includes dinner and breakfast. It is very social with everyone sitting down for dinner together every night. Close to Ave Tulum and ADO bus. They have dorms and private rooms. They also provide shuttle pick-up from the airport. 
  • 2 Villa Playa Blanca, Carretera Puerto Juarez-PuntaSam Km 3.8, SM86, Mz4, L11. fracciones 1 y 2 (A lado del restaurante Flamingos), ☏ 52 19981098275, ✉. Check-out: 13:00. 10 min by bus from downtown (buses leaving every 5 minutes for 4,5 pesos). Very quiet and with a nice ambiance. Good rooms and free breakfast in bed every morning. Free wifi, swimming pool and views. Ask for the room "La Palma", it's M$400, but you have more than 50² m of space. Doubles from M$350 pesos (A/C). 
  • 3 Hotel Rivemar, Av Tulum 51 (Next to Farmacia Similares on Av Tulum & Andandor Claves, a block up from Chedraui on Av Tulum), ☏ 52 998 884 1199. Registrare: 15:00, check-out: 12:00. In the downtown area near the bus station. M$330 for a private, two-bed room for two people. M$440 if you want air conditioning. Free wifi Internet. Front desk help is very friendly. You can keep your bags at the hotel even after checking out. You can take the Rt. 1 bus to the hotel/beaches district for M$8.5. 
  • 4 Hostel Kankun, Yaxchilan Ave/end of MaraÑon St #26, ☏ 52 998-101-7399. The cheapest hostel in Cancun and within walking distance of the ADO bus station. Includes 24hr reception, towels, free wifi, and fans in each room. Has private rooms and dorm beds available. Does not take credit cards. The is a very basic hostel, but their nightly rate is set accordingly. They take online reservations through most hostel sites. US$5/person/night. (updated Mar 2016)

Formerly the Macarena Hostel, this new iteration is clean and contemporary and doesn't have the wild party atmosphere that most of the other hostels around do, which is a plus if you're actually wanting to get a few winks of sleep at night.   • 7 Fiesta Party Hostel - Cancun, Alcatraces #43, SM:22 Mza:10, ☏ 52 998 892 7902. This hostel does not fail to live up to its name, and if you are looking to hang out with your fellow party people, you shouldn't be disappointed here, where drinks and revelry flow freely. If you don't like noise, on the other hand, this might not be the most ideal accommodation. Mid-range

The economical way to stay in the hotels and resorts in some of the "mid range" and in the "splurge" categories is to consider an "all inclusive" on BookIt.com or another similar company which typically would include airfare (on chartered or regularly scheduled flights), airport transfers and hotel stay. Some of these all inclusive packages may also include two or three daily meals and/or an escorted tour or some other organized activity in the area. Checking in at the front desk without prebooking for a room or a pre-purchased all inclusive or packaged tour is the most expensive way to check in.

Swimming pool, and a restaurant that serves tasty food with ocean view. No jacuzzi, but you can use the jacuzzi and swimming pool at their sister hotel, Avalon Grande, that's nearby.

  • Grand Oasis Cancún, Boulevard Kukulcan Km 16.5 Lt45-47, Zona Hotelera, ☏ 52 800 016 2747. Resort with a college-aged crowd. The rooms are clean and surprisingly spacious for the price. The pool is generally crowded during peak times but is large and features several swim-up bars. The bad part is that since the Oasis is all-inclusive you basically get what you pay for, the food and drinks are not the best quality. The buffet-style restaurants are bland and the food can get quite repetitive. An exception is the sushi restaurant. All bars also stop serving alcohol at midnight, which is unfortunate, but there is a 24 hr liquor store right across from the resort with prices somewhat expensive for Mexico. They also sell absinthe. M$2785. 
  • RIU Cancún, Blvd Kukulcan km 8.5, Manzana 50, Lote 5, Zona Hotelera. Resort with views of the Caribbean Sea. Several restaurants and bars. Choice of activities and entertainment options, including a sports bar, night club and theatre with theme shows.
  • RIU Caribe, Blvd Kukulcan, km 5.5, Lote 6-C. All inclusive resort with Mayan-style architecture overlooking the Caribbean. 506 sea view rooms with mini-bar and liquor dispenser. Several restaurants, bars and facilities including 24 hr snacks and beverages. Fun and relaxing atmosphere created by the large swimming pool and spectacular beach.
  • The Royal Resorts. The Royal Resorts have been around since 1974 and include a string of 4 hotels all in close vicinity of each other. The Royal Mayan, The Royal Caribbean and The Royal Islander are side by side whereas the newest hotel, The Royal Sands, is no more than a five minute ride by bus. The Royal Resorts offer beautiful villas that overlook the Gulf of Mexico. Each villa is equipped with a kitchen, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, one with two double beds, one with a queen sized bed, a living room with two murphy beds, three televisions, one in each room, and a terrace that overlooks the other two hotels as well as the Caribbean Sea. These hotels include free activities such as snorkeling and sailing in the ocean, tennis, and free beach towels. Also on the premises are a number of different restaurants and bars at which the vacationers may dine.

Each room has a private balcony with a table and chairs. 3 restaurants on-site, including a steakhouse, a Japanese restaurant and a sports bar. The beach in front of the resort has been restored, as has the pool area. The hotel itself tends to be priced on the higher side for Cancún, but that also tends to weed out the younger crowd. This resort is adjacent to the JW Marriott Cancún and is directly connected to it through a pathway. There are up-charges for almost everything here, and they will try to sell you timeshares.

You could also try out the growing vacation rental market as well. It's a chance to experience Cancún without having to share close spaces with thousands of tourists. They are an alternative if you are willing to go without the frills of room service or resort commodities.

Most resorts in the hotel zone have a travel agent on site during the daytime to assist you with making reservations around Cancún, including the Mayan ruins. It is often better to book activities through these travel agents as they are employed by the hotel and cannot easily cheat you. Activities are also sold at booths found in the busier areas. Prices for the same activities are cheaper in Cancún town than in the hotel zone.

Stay healthy

It is strongly recommended that you buy bottled water. Bottled water, depending on size, typically costs 30-50 pesos (US$2.75-4.55).

Otherwise, do not drink the water unless your hotel has a water purification system. Most of the resorts in Cancún have purified water at all of the facilities located inside the resorts including the bars and restaurants. The upper-scale restaurants usually have purified water as well, but the water outside of these areas is not safe to drink.

The sun's UV rays are extremely strong in Cancún, even on cloudy days, and will burn any exposed skin on most persons from northern climates within a few minutes. Sunscreens that may be adequate elsewhere may not be sufficient in Cancún.

Because Cancún has powerful waves (see below), do not assume your sunscreen layer will remain intact. Always apply a fresh layer of sunscreen after taking a dip in the ocean.

Timeshares

Expect to be inundated with offers to get free tickets, tours, or other items in exchange for viewing a timeshare presentation while in Cancún. While you will generally be given what is promised for viewing the presentation, expect a very high pressure sales pitch lasting from one to two hours during which you may be given incorrect information or promises that later turn out to be untrue. In particular, despite claims of agencies that can buyback your timeshare, most timeshares are a money-losing proposition for purchasers. As with any major purchase, take the time to research before buying - claims that you must buy something right now should always be treated with skepticism. See also Common scams.

Ocean currents— The ocean currents in Cancún, depending on the season you visit, can be strong. While the currents may not be strong enough to pull you under, keep your guard up at all times. Look for the coloured flags that are planted on the beach as well as ask your hotel's concierge or a lifeguard (if one is available). As a rule of thumb, if you're not a strong swimmer (or a non-swimmer) it is best to stick to the hotel's pool for water fun. Remember, beaches in Mexico are Federal Zones with no life guards on duty, lifeguards may only be found within the beaches at the hotels.

Weather— Cancún is a place where the weather can change in a matter of minutes rather than hours. As in most tropical places, rain storms will start quickly and leave as quickly as it came. When a storm lingers, use caution in the water; especially when lightning is present.

Timeshare and condos are a big business all over Yucatan, especially Cancún. "Tourist information" is another word for sales representative. If someone is offering you an "free" tour to anyplace or at a discount this means a 90-minute or longer presentation about condos and time-shares. There are 20 reps waiting on the righthand side when you arrive at the Cancún airport. There are also reps in Mexico city attracting tourists with free Xe-Hal and Chichen Ha tours. These timeshare presentations are not always a waste of time. Some of these timeshare presentations offer coupons or other free offers which can total to several thousand dollars of savings during your trip if you are willing to endure the presentation.

Nothing is free- Most important lesson. Someone comes up to you and says you want a shot of tequlia? Come on its fun. This means you have not negotiated the price.

Don't use ATMs out of the banks- There are ATMs all over Cancún. Use only ones that are inside banks or your hotel. Pharmacies, stores, gas stations are to be avoided. You will become a victim of identity theft or you will find big charges for the commission of using them.

The Buddy System- If you plan to have a long night out in the strip, take precautions and have a friend with you at all times (even walking to the bathroom). Unsuspecting tipsy tourists can be easy targets for petty robbery.

  • Chichén Itzá Archaeological Site— The largest Maya archaeological site in Yucatan, Chichen Itza is often visited on a day trip from Cancún, but is rather distant and only a small portion of the site and attractions can be seen this way. If you find the ancient Maya of interest, spend a night at one of the hotels at Chichen so you can avoid having a rushed incomplete visit. You can take a public bus or a private vehicle, about 2½ hours from Cancún by car. Also, close to the site is a cenote, which is a fresh water sinkhole, where you can swim. The Kukulcán Pyramid, one of the most impressive Maya structures and voted one of the World's New Seven Wonders, is now closed off to climbing to preserve it from wear.
  • Tulum— The only major Maya archaeological site to overlook the Caribbean Sea is only 128 km (80 mi) south of Cancún. Not one of the larger Maya sites, but the seaside location gives it a beautiful setting. Bus services from Cancún run around 2 hr and cost M$60. Tulum has over 60 different structures and is believed to be one of the most important ceremonial sites for the Maya people. This archaeological zone that date back more than 7 centuries show the remains of a huge walled city with roads, homes and businesses by the sea. The major highlight of Tulum is El Castillo which is a large pyramid that sits on a forty-foot cliff. El Castillo is thought to be a part of a series of lighthouses. The architecture is similar to Chichen Itza but on a much smaller scale and you are not allowed to go inside or climb on the pyramids.
  • Isla Mujeres— A great break from the Cancún tourist traps. This small island is a 20 minute ferry ride from the hotel zone or from Puerto Juárez Federal Dock, located 5 minutes from downtown Cancún. Rent a scooter to get around the island fast and cheap. There is a beautiful ecological water theme park, Garrafon, with splendid vistas on land and a magical underwater world.
  • Cozumel— A very pretty island and the most inhabited in all of Mexico, it is also an important Caribbean port of call. Chankanaab National Park is located here. Well known for its watersport activities such as diving, snorkeling, sailing, boating and fishing.
  • Coba— A beautiful site; it was one the largest Maya cities in ancient times, but much is still hidden under lush jungle. It boasts the tallest pyramid of the Yucatan Peninsula, the Nohoch Mul. Muyil boasts a lake surrounded by many Maya constructions.
  • Valladolid is a small city dating from the Spanish Colonial era with lots of period local charm, between Cancún and Chichen Itza. The selection of hotels and restaurants makes it a nice base for a night or two; it's a good deal closer to Chichen, and other impressive Maya ruins at Ek Balam are only about 15 minutes north of town.
