La città del festival di Bayreuth in alto Franconia (Oberfranken) è relativamente tranquillo per la maggior parte dell'anno fino a quando il Festival di Richard Wagner si ferma per 30 giorni ogni estate. Bayreuth presenta una ricchezza di imponente architettura barocca e rococò, oltre alla birra della Franconia appena prodotta nel locale Biergarten. Sebbene la città rimanga abbastanza tranquilla rispetto alle città molto più grandi della Germania, la presenza di oltre 10.000 studenti all'Università di Bayreuth significa che non è difficile trovare una vita notturna attiva.

Bayreuth è famosa in Germania come l'ospite del Festival di Richard Wagner (Festspiele) ogni anno da luglio ad agosto. A tale riguardo, la maggior parte dell'industria turistica si è evoluta intorno alla vita e ai tempi di Richard Wagner e di Margravine Wilhelmine, uno dei maggiori contributori nel portare le arti a Bayreuth. Per la maggior parte dell'anno Bayreuth è tranquilla, un po' fuori mano dai principali itinerari turistici. Tuttavia, durante il Festspiele, la città si riempie all'inverosimile; gli hotel sono quasi impossibili da prenotare e in certi orari il traffico in alcune zone rallenta quasi fino a fermarsi.
Storia
La città di Bayreuth è emersa durante il Medioevo, con un mercato di strada nel centro della città. All'inizio della sua storia, Bayreuth era solo un piccolo villaggio nei diffusi possedimenti degli Hohenzollern e subì molte piaghe e guerre. La città fu completamente distrutta durante la guerra hussita nel 1430, subì gravi pestilenze anche fino al 1602, e subì gravi danni da incendi nel 1605 e nel 1621. Margravio Cristiano di Kulmbach vi trasferì la sua residenza nel 1603, e dopo il Guerra dei Trent'anni la città iniziò a svilupparsi come una città più importante con un'architettura barocca più distinta.
Quando il margravio Federico sposò Guglielmina, sorella del re Federico II di Prussia, Bayreuth iniziò a sviluppare il suo aspetto attuale. Margravine Wilhelmine era un amante attivo delle arti e dell'architettura. Ha commissionato a famosi architetti italiani la progettazione del Teatro dell'Opera dei Margravi (patrimonio mondiale dell'UNESCO), che è stato il più grande in Germania per oltre un secolo. Ancora oggi è uno dei teatri d'opera barocchi più decorati del mondo. Inoltre, Guglielmina ampliò la residenza estiva e i giardini del Margravio e commissionò l'imponente Palazzo Nuovo. Durante il regno di Federico e Guglielmina, le arti fiorirono a Bayreuth.
Nel 1872, il magnifico teatro dell'opera attirò a Bayreuth persino il compositore Richard Wagner, che da allora visse lì fino alla sua morte, 11 anni dopo. Ironia della sorte, le opere di Wagner non sono mai state eseguite in quel teatro dell'opera. Invece, il Festspielhaus, un nuovo teatro dell'opera fu costruito appositamente sulla "collina verde" sopra la città, finanziato dal re Ludovico II di Baviera. Da allora la città ha avuto un rapporto integrale con Richard Wagner. Il Festival Richard Wagner è iniziato nel 1876 per commemorare ed eseguire le opere del famoso compositore. Durante l'era nazista, Hitler considerava Bayreuth uno dei centri culturali più importanti della Germania e, come tale, Bayreuth fu bombardata durante la seconda guerra mondiale, anche se molto meno pesantemente rispetto, ad esempio, a Norimberga. Nell'ultimo mezzo secolo, Bayreuth ha ricostruito, ha continuato il Festival di Richard Wagner ed è cresciuta silenziosamente, principalmente intorno all'Università, che è stata fondata nel 1975.
Orientamento
Il Città di Bayreuth (Kreisfreie Stadt Bayreuth) si trova come un'enclave nel molto più grande distretto rurale di Bayreuth (Landkreis Bayreuth). Sono allo stesso livello della gerarchia amministrativa e sono governati in modo indipendente. il rurale Landkreis contiene molte piccole città e villaggi che meritano una visita. Copre parti del Svizzera della Franconia nel sud-ovest e nel Fichtelgebirge nel nord-est, con la città proprio nel mezzo. Il centro storico della città si trova a sud del Rosso Principale (Roter principale), un piccolo fiume che alla fine sfocerà nel Reno.
Il 1 Informazioni turistiche l'ufficio fornisce molte informazioni molto dettagliate. È in Opernstraße 22, vicino al Teatro dell'Opera dei Margravi (orario d'ufficio Lun-Ven 09:00-21:00 e Sab 09:00-16:00 tutto l'anno, anche Dom 10:00-14:00 da maggio a ottobre). Offre un tour della città di due ore (in tedesco) tutti i giorni alle 10:30 (solo il sabato da novembre ad aprile) per € 6,50. Il punto di incontro è l'ufficio TI. L'ufficio TI fornisce anche mappe della città e mappe della città/regionale per i ciclisti, alcune delle quali sono anche disponibile online.
Clima
L'inverno è normalmente nuvoloso e umido, con temperature che non si discostano troppo dal gelo. La primavera può essere relativamente fresca, ma il clima diventa pian piano più gradevole ed è accolto da numerose fiere e sagre di strada (vedi Eventi). Anche l'estate è piacevole, scandita da occasionali giornate calde. Durante le stagioni più calde, caffè all'aperto e Biergarten abbondano nel centro acciottolato della città.

Con il treno
- 1 Bayreuth Hauptbahnhof (stazione ferroviaria principale) (circa 1 km a nord del centro città, facilmente raggiungibile a piedi). Diversi autobus vanno anche dalla stazione ferroviaria alla stazione centrale degli autobus (ZOH) nel centro del paese (Linee 301, 302, 303, 305 e 309).
Sebbene non ci siano treni a lunga percorrenza che si fermano a Bayreuth, frequenti servizi ferroviari regionali collegano Bayreuth ad altre regioni di Franconia e settentrionale Baviera. Bayreuth fa parte del Rete VGN e all'interno di quella regione i biglietti giornalieri per autobus e treni che coprono grandi aree sono relativamente economici. Per portarti da e per dire Norimberga dovresti pagare solo € 18 per un gruppo fino a 2 adulti e 4 ragazzi (sotto i 18 anni). Il biglietto Bayern è anche un'opzione economica per gruppi fino a cinque (senza limiti di età) a partire da 23€ per una persona e 3€ per ogni persona in più. Servizi regolari esistono sette giorni su sette da e per:
- Norimberga – Regional-Express (RE) treni una volta all'ora (66 minuti di viaggio). Molte volte questi treni si separano lungo il percorso, quindi assicurati di salire a bordo del segmento di treno corretto.
- Dresda - cambiare in Hof (di solito stesso binario, il treno con cui cambi va a Norimberga)
- Bamberga – Diretto RI treni ogni due ore (tempo di percorrenza 1 ora e mezza), altrimenti è necessario un cambio a Lichtenfels. Nota che una parte di questo collegamento (tra Burgkunststadt e Ramsenthal) non fa parte della rete VGN, quindi i loro biglietti giornalieri non sono validi su quel segmento. Dovrai acquistare un biglietto separato per quel segmento, ottenere un normale biglietto Bamberg–Bayreuth di sola andata o semplicemente utilizzare il biglietto Bayern.
A piedi
Diversi sentieri escursionistici attraversano Bayreuth. Alcuni di loro sono a tema attorno a un argomento speciale (ad esempio Jean Paul, un autore locale o un percorso a tema birra)
In macchina
Bayreuth è ben collegata alla rete autostradale tedesca. Lungo la A 9 che collega Monaco al sud con Berlino a nord, Bayreuth si trova a circa 70 km a nord di Norimberga e 40 km a sud di Hof. L'uscita nord Bayreuth-Nord (N. 41) può creare un po' di confusione soprattutto quando si arriva da nord, e se non si fa attenzione si può finire nel distretto industriale invece di dirigersi a sud verso il centro città. Quella zona è un labirinto di strade a senso unico, ma fortunatamente non è troppo grande. Mantieni la calma e segui le indicazioni per entrambi Stadtmitte o Centro Rotmain (non importa davvero) e tornerai presto sulla strada giusta. L'uscita sud Bayreuth Sud (n. 42) è molto più facile da affrontare.
Venendo da ovest, la A 70 incontra la A 9 un paio di chilometri a nord della città. Nella maggior parte dei casi, ti consigliamo di prendere l'uscita n. 24 (Kulmbach/Neudrossenfeld) e poi seguire la B 85 verso Bayreuth.
In aereo
L'aeroporto più vicino con regolare servizio commerciale è in Norimberga (NUE IATA). Molti voli internazionali arrivano in Germania via Aeroporto di Francoforte (FRA IATA) o Aeroporto di Monaco di Baviera (MUC IATA), tuttavia.
- 2 Aeroporto di Bayreuth (BYU IATA, ICAO: EDQD), a nord-est della città. L'aeroporto di Bayreuth è utilizzato principalmente per sport aerei, voli d'affari e altre forme di forms aviazione generale. Gli orari di apertura regolari sono tutti i giorni dalle 06:30 alle 18:00 in estate, con orari ridotti in inverno (altrimenti PPR). Offre una pista in asfalto di 1034 x 30 m e attrezzature per avvicinamenti secondo le regole del volo strumentale. I servizi doganali e di immigrazione sono disponibili solo previa richiesta (48 ore).
Con il bus
Diverse aziende servono linee nazionali a lunga distanza da e per Bayreuth. Gli autobus interurbani non fermano alla stazione centrale degli autobus (ZOH); la maggior parte di loro si ferma al 3 Fermata dell'autobus Goethestraße invece, dove troverai collegamenti con diversi autobus regionali. Gli autobus locali, tuttavia, non si fermano qui, quindi nella maggior parte dei casi dovrai fare il giro dell'isolato verso la stazione ferroviaria principale (Hbf), dove avrai accesso a diverse linee di autobus urbani e a numerosi taxi. Alcuni autobus Intercity fermano anche all'Università (fermata Mensa), che è collegato al centro città tramite le linee di autobus locali 304, 306 e 316. Alcuni percorsi hanno anche una fermata nei vicini parcheggi adiacenti all'autostrada, da dove dovresti organizzare il ritiro.
Se viaggi in gruppo e la tua destinazione o punto di partenza è all'interno del Bundesland della Baviera prendere il "Bayern-Ticket" potrebbe comunque risultare più economico dell'autobus.
Andare in giro
A piedi
Bayreuth è una città molto percorribile a piedi, poiché il terreno è pianeggiante e le distanze sono brevi. La maggior parte dei luoghi di interesse sono facilmente raggiungibili a piedi all'interno della città. Fanno eccezione il Festspielhaus, l'Eremitage e il Fantaisie, tutti facilmente accessibili in autobus o in bicicletta. La maggior parte delle vaste zone pedonali nel centro della città intorno alla Maximilianstraße sono pavimentate con pietre naturali piatte o grandi lastricati, che rendono la camminata abbastanza comoda rispetto ai ciottoli medievali che potresti trovare altrove. A meno che non ci sia una specie di veramente evento popolare che si svolge nella piazza del mercato, anche nelle giornate estive più affollate le strade non sono mai troppo affollate. Tieni presente che la bicicletta è consentita praticamente ovunque nelle zone pedonali e che i residenti ne fanno un uso massiccio.
Con il bus
La rete di autobus intorno a Bayreuth offre un'ampia copertura della città e delle aree circostanti, con la maggior parte degli autobus che passano a intervalli di 20 minuti. Il 4 fermata dell'autobus centrale (di nome ZOH per Zentrale Omnibus Haltestelle, non ZOB come nella maggior parte degli altri posti in Germania) è un isolato a nord di Maximilianstraße vicino al municipio (Rathaus). Poiché Bayreuth è membro dell'unione tariffaria VGN, gli orari e le tariffe sono disponibili presso il loro sito web. Sono disponibili anche mappe e orari degli autobus sul sito web della Stadtwerke Bayreuth. Sono disponibili pass giornalieri (Tageskarte). La sera e nei fine settimana alcune tratte sono servite solo su richiesta. Le connessioni vengono quindi contrassegnate Alt (per Anruf-Linien-Taxi) sugli orari e dovrai chiamare ☏ 49 921 20208 richiedere l'autobus con almeno 30 minuti di anticipo.
In bici
Andare in bicicletta è facile e conveniente a Bayreuth e probabilmente il modo migliore per spostarsi. Andare in bicicletta nelle zone pedonali è consentito praticamente ovunque, ma ricorda che i pedoni hanno la priorità. Al di fuori della città, molte piste ciclabili panoramiche si irradiano da Bayreuth nelle aree circostanti. Tra maggio e ottobre, le E-bike possono essere noleggiate presso l'Ufficio Informazioni Turistiche per € 20 al giorno (più un deposito cauzionale di € 120 che ti verrà restituito alla riconsegna della bici).
In macchina
Rispetto alle città più grandi, Bayreuth è relativamente facile da raggiungere in auto. L'Hohenzollernring, il Wittelsbacherring e la Cosima-Wagner-Straße formano insieme l'anello centrale attorno al nucleo più interno della città. L'interno di quell'anello è in gran parte pedonale e può essere un po' difficile da navigare, quindi non è una cattiva idea evitare l'area.
Parcheggio
Trovare un posto per parcheggiare il tuo veicolo non è un grosso problema finché sei disposto a pagare. A meno che il tuo alloggio non offra un parcheggio gratuito, uno dei garage commerciali è probabilmente la scelta migliore. Ce ne sono molti nelle immediate vicinanze del centro città: P7 e P8 richiedono persino di guidare per pochi metri attraverso la zona pedonale. Questi due sono però alla fine più costosa della fascia di prezzo € 0,80-2,00/ora. Il 5 Parcheggio P1 al Oberfankenhalle e il 6 Parcheggi del Rotmain Center tendono ad essere tra le opzioni meno costose. I parcheggi lungo la strada dentro e intorno al centro città sono in genere limitati a un massimo di due ore e richiedono di ottenere un biglietto presso uno dei distributori automatici o di utilizzare il app per smartphone easy park. Più lontano nelle aree residenziali, potresti essere in grado di trovare un posto gratuito, ma tieni presente che questi sono spesso limitati a 2 ore o solo ai residenti. Non essere tentato di tentare la fortuna sui parcheggi dei clienti di supermercati e altri negozi: la maggior parte di loro ha affidato a società terze la responsabilità dei propri parcheggi e quelli volere ti fanno pagare una multa salata se li usi male.
Tuttavia, è possibile parcheggiare gratuitamente, anche se in genere un po' meno comodo. C'è un grande 7 parcheggio gratuito nel Frankengutstrasse vicino alla piscina pubblica. Se arrivi nel tardo pomeriggio/sera (o il tuo soggiorno cade nelle pause estive/invernali), hai quasi la certezza di trovare un parcheggio gratuito nel campus dell'Università. C'è un altro 8 parcheggio gratuito all'angolo di Friedrich-Ebert-Straße e Grünewaldstrasse e ancora più parcheggio gratuito sulla sponda opposta del fiume. 9 Parcheggio al Teatro del Festival è anche gratuito, almeno al di fuori della stagione dei festival.
Auto a noleggio
Ci sono solo tre compagnie che offrono auto a noleggio a Bayreuth: Avvis nel Nürnbergerstrasse a est dell'Università, Europcar nel Albrecht-Dürer-Straße appena a nord-est del centro città, e Sixt lontano nel nord vicino all'autostrada nel Bernecker Straße.

Come nella maggior parte delle città tedesche di queste dimensioni, i taxi a Bayreuth sono costosi e rari: non perdere tempo a fermarne uno per strada. Ci sono quasi 20 compagnie di taxi situate in città, ma quale scegli non ha molta importanza: seguono tutte lo stesso schema tariffario (disponibile in tedesco Qui). Molte delle aziende cooperano nel Taxi Union Bayreuth con una hotline telefonica condivisa 24 ore su 24, 7 giorni su 7 (☏ 49 921 22 333 e ☏ 49 921 24 088). Altrimenti, di solito puoi trovare un taxi alla stazione dei treni o al 10 posteggio dei taxi nella piazza del mercato vicino Karstadt.

Principali attrazioni
La maggior parte delle attrazioni di Bayreuth provengono dalla residenza della margravia Guglielmina e di suo marito, il margravio Friedrich. Diligente sostenitore delle arti e della cultura, Wilhelmine ha portato architetti italiani e costruttori francesi a costruire molti dei monumenti storici della città. In quanto tale, gran parte dell'architettura riflette forti influenze barocche e rococò.

Per una città delle sue dimensioni, Bayreuth è ricca di musei. Degni di nota tra i tanti sono i Museo Richard Wagner e Museo Franz-Liszt, che documenta la vita di questi importanti compositori tedeschi e ungheresi, il Guinness dei primati riconosciuto Birrificio Maisel e Museo Cooper, così come i musei situati nel Palazzo Nuovo: Faiences di Bayreuther - La collezione Rummel, Le Gallerie di Stato e Bayreuth di Margravia Guglielmina (vedere Nuovo Palazzo elenco sopra per questi).

Tour il sabato alle 16:00 o tour di gruppo su prenotazione. Aktien Breweries offre un interessante tour attraverso le caverne di birra in arenaria che hanno operato dal XVI al XIX secolo. Poiché le caverne rimangono molto fresche durante tutto l'anno, si consiglia un abbigliamento adeguato.

Una collezione di attrezzi agricoli che mette in luce gli strumenti e le tecniche dei contadini dell'Alta Franconia. - 21 Giardino di Corte (Hofgarten) (dietro il Neues Schloss). Aperto 24 ore al giorno tutto l'anno. Il giardino di corte del Neues Schloss, questo parco offre un gradito angolo di verde nel centro della città. Nelle giornate di sole, molti residenti qui si rilassano o si allenano con un po' di sport. Gratuito.
- 22 Orto Botanico Ecologico (Ökologisch-Botanischer Garten), Universitätsstrasse 30 (direttamente a sud del campus dell'Università). Il concetto alla base dell'Orto Botanico Ecologico è quello di mostrare le piante in un ambiente che rappresenti il più fedelmente possibile i loro habitat naturali. Quindi, è strutturato in più sezioni, che rappresentano diversi ecosistemi provenienti da diverse parti del mondo. Gli orari di apertura dipendono dalla stagione e dal giorno della settimana (chiuso il sabato); le serre hanno orari di apertura leggermente più brevi rispetto al resto dei giardini. Gratuito.

- 23 Tierpark Röhrensee, Pottensteiner Strasse. 24/7. Parco che circonda un laghetto (il Röhrensee). Ha un piccolo zoo e un grande parco giochi. Gratuito.
- 24 Wilhelminenaue (segui il fiume a monte). sempre aperto. A monte del Red Main, a nord-est del centro città, si trova il Wilhelminenaue. Questa sezione del fiume ha subito una rinaturazione negli anni 2010 e i campi circostanti sono stati trasformati in un parco per la Baviera 2016 Landesgartenschau ("Mostra del Giardino di Stato"). Un ottimo posto per correre, portare a spasso il cane, ecc., specialmente quando l'Hofgarten è troppo piccolo per te. gratuito.

- 25 Chiesa e Torre del Castello (Schlosskirche e Schlossturm), Schlossberglein 5, 95444 Bayreuth, ☏ 49 9 21 885 88. Apre per tour prestabiliti. Anche la cappella di corte e la torre furono commissionate e costruite da Friedrich e Wilhelmine, completate nel 1758. Qui si trova la tomba di Friedrich e Wilhelmine. La scala a chiocciola della torre è dotata di una rampa per portare i rifornimenti fino al corpo di guardia, che ha una splendida vista sulla città e sul vicino Fichtelgebirge. €1.

Fare
Con le sue ampie strade pedonali, il centro della città è facile da passeggiare e offre un piacevole contrasto con molte altre città della Germania meridionale ricche di architettura medievale. Durante l'estate molti caffè e gelaterie allestiscono posti a sedere all'aperto nelle principali vie dello shopping, Maximilianstraße, Sophienstraße e Von-Römer-Straße. Come in ogni città in Bierfranken (confrontare Birrerie in Franconia), provando alcuni dei birre locali è un dovere. La birra predefinita nella maggior parte dei pub è una sorta di lager chiara (Helles), ma le vere specialità sono quelle più scure – attenzione Zwickl, Zoigl, Kellerbier o Dunkles sul menu. È interessante notare che il più grande birrificio di Bayreuth è meglio conosciuto in tutta la Germania per la sua birra di frumento Il Weisse di Maisel: Questo stile di birra è molto comune nella Baviera propriamente detta ("Altbayern"), ma normalmente non sarebbe considerato una cosa tipica della Franconia. Vita notturna non è la cosa per cui Bayreuth è famosa, almeno per quanto riguarda i club e le danze. Un ottimo posto per concerti e feste è il Glashaus nel campus universitario, mentre alcuni buoni pub si trovano vicino al centro città.
Quando viaggi in estate, assicurati di non perdere il bello Theta birreria all'aperto. È sulle colline sopra Bayreuth ed è difficile arrivarci. Ma varrebbe la pena anche prendere un taxi. Per le persone attive è possibile fare una bella escursione qui dal Festspielhaus. Questo ti darebbe anche l'opportunità di scalare il vecchio Siegesturm (= torre della vittoria), che offre una vista panoramica su (quasi) tutta la città (gratuito, chiuso in inverno).
Guarda un film al Cineplex a 7 schermi vicino al Rotmain-Center (vedi la sezione Acquista). I film sono per lo più proiettati in tedesco, ma alcuni blockbuster sono anche proiettati con il sonoro originale: cerca quelli contrassegnati OV (versione originale) o OMU (originale con sottotitoli in tedesco).
Gli sport
Buoni posti per il tempo libero in esecuzione sono i Röhrensee parco e il Studentenwald foresta che si attacca ad esso nel sud, così come il Wilhelminenaue parco nel nord-est della città.
Se preferisci guardare altre persone che fanno il lavoro, Medi Bayreuth gioca nella massima divisione tedesca per il basket. Le loro partite casalinghe si svolgono nel 1 Oberfrankenhalle 
, che fa parte del parco sportivo appena a nord del centro cittadino. Il vicino 2 Hans-Walter-Wild-Stadion è la sede della squadra di calcio locale SpVgg Bayreuth.
Nuoto e sauna
Bayreuth ha molto da offrire in termini di nuoto, sudorazione e spruzzi d'acqua. In estate, una visita al Kreuzsteinbad è un gioco da ragazzi anche se (o: soprattutto quando) sei a corto di soldi. In inverno, questo ruolo è ricoperto dal Stadtbad. Il Terme Lohengrin si rivolge più all'estremo opposto dello spettro ed è una buona scelta per coloro che sono disposti a pagare per trattamenti esclusivi. E se viaggi con bambini il Terme Obernsees potrebbe essere proprio quello che stai cercando.

Da maggio a settembre: tutti i giorni 07:00–20:00. Il Kreuzsteinbad è una classica piscina all'aperto come si può trovare in qualsiasi città tedesca. Niente di eccezionale, ma molto amato da residenti, studenti universitari e viaggiatori, non solo per i biglietti d'ingresso incredibilmente bassi. È stato modernizzato e dispone di una piscina da competizione di 50 m per il nuoto serio, una piscina con le onde, una torre per tuffi, uno scivolo d'acqua e una piscina per bambini. C'è un parco giochi per bambini e campi per giocare a beach volley, basket, calcio e badminton, ma anche tanto prato per godersi un po' di relax al sole. È consentito portare il proprio cibo e bevande (niente bottiglie di vetro, però!) - e probabilmente una buona idea a meno che non si voglia sopravvivere alla giornata mangiando patatine fritte e gelato. Se vuoi usare gli armadietti dovrai portare il tuo lucchetto o prenderne uno in prestito alla reception (con un deposito di € 10). Se hai intenzione di trascorrere solo poche ore, considera di venire dopo le 17:00, poiché i biglietti d'ingresso saranno ancora più economici! Biglietto giornaliero adulti: 4,30€ €.

The sauna and the spa are clothes-free zones, towels and bathing gowns can be rented for €2 and €4, respectively. Children younger than 6 are not allowed in any section. The spa has an additional minimum age of 14 and is ladies-only on Tuesdays (except holidays). From €9 for 2 hours in the thermal baths to €21 for a day pass including sauna.

Probably your best choice if you're into some serious swimming, the SBV-Hallenbad offers a 50 m competition pool and a 5 m diving tower. There's also a variable-depth (30-120 cm) pool for babies and toddlers and a steam bath. The sauna (not included in the normal entrance fee) is women-only on Mondays (mixed after 18:00) and Wednesdays, men-only on Tuesdays (mixed after 18:00) and Thursdays and mixed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Adults pay €4 for swimming only and €11 for swimming and sauna (no time limits).

A bit outside the core city (but still within the Landkreis Bayreuth) lie the Obernsees thermal baths. If you prefer the sporty side of swimming this may not quite be your cup of tea, but pretty much everyone else should find something here. There are plenty of options for fun and relaxation, indoors and outdoors: pools, water jets, slides, and more than half a dozen different saunas. Obernsees is a good destination for a bike tour, as the bike path along the former railway line between Bayreuth and Hollfeld passes right through it. Adults pay between €10 for 2 hours and €15.50 for a day pass, sauna is an additional €5.

- 1 Africa-Caribbean-Festival (Afrika-Karibik-Festival): annually, ☏ 49 162 1975253. For four days each summer, the air in the pedestrian zone in the city centre is filled with decidedly non-local rhythms and scents. African culture is one major focus of the University of Bayreuth, and the festival is the ideal opportunity for everyone to experience some of that first hand. The market offers contemporary arts and craft (as well as the occasional Bob Marley T-shirt) and more than 50 food stands with delicious snacks and meals from different regions. Gratuito.
- 2 Bayreuth Festival (Bayreuther Festspiele, Richard Wagner Festival): July – August annually, Festspielhügel 1-2 (Bus 305 to Am Festspielhaus), ☏ 49 921 7 87 80. If there's one thing Bayreuth is famous for, this is it: the annual performance of Richard Wagner's operas in the Festspielhaus. During the festival, huge crowds flock to Bayreuth for a chance to see the performances. Getting tickets has gotten much easier lately: If you order by mail you still may have to wait for a couple of years, but if you buy online chances of getting lucky are much higher. Tickets are being sold through the Festival's website in batches over the year on a first come first served basis. The last batch (the ones that have been returned or not been paid for) is typically sold around the end of June, so there's a chance for getting last minute tickets if you keep a close eye on the online shop. €30-320, depending on the seat and what's being played.
- 3 Citizens Festival (Bürgerfest): first weekend in July annually, ☏ 49 921 885 737, ✉[email protected]. For one weekend every July, almost the whole city centre around the market square turns into one big festival zone when the citizens of Bayreuth celebrate themselves and the city they live in. All kinds of music are played from several stages of different sizes that are scattered around the area. There's food and drinks everywhere, and whilethe evenings can get pretty wild, the Sunday is all about families and the arts market. Gratuito.
- 4 Folk Festival (Volksfest): late spring annually, Volksfestplatz at the intersection of Äußere Badstr. and Friedrich-Ebert-Str., ☏ 49 921 885 737, ✉[email protected]. Il Volksfest is another classic Bayreuth event that has been visited by generations (2019 was its 110th incarnation). Not unlike Munich's famous Oktoberfest, it is a bit of a cross-over between a traditional folk festival and a modern fun fair. Gratuito.
- Jazz-November: November annually, ✉[email protected]. The Jazz-November takes place on the weekend after the fall school holidays. Over four days (starting on Thursday), the Jazzforum Bayreuth hosts a series of concerts featuring a fine selection of big names from the international jazz scene, hidden gems and hot newcomers. Locations vary accordingly, ranging from intimate concerts in cozy bars to dance parties in a classic 80ies night club atmosphere.
- 5 Wheat Beer Festival (Maisel's Weissbierfest): Every year in April or May, Hindenburgstr. 9. Since 1987, each year the Maisel's brewery hosts their Wheat Beer Festival. It usually starts on a Thursday and culminates in a free concert with an internationally known headliner on Saturday. Over the past couple of years, Rock and Pop performers such as Kim Wilde, Status Quo, Kool & The Gang, James Harvest Barclay or ELO have played there. The Sunday is all about sports – anyone can participate in the Fun Run through the city, although you'd have to register for that well in advance. Gratuito.

The pedestrian zone of the city centre (especially Maximilianstraße) has no lack of smaller shops and some larger stores. Slightly west of the city centre is the 1 Rotmain-Center, a shopping centre with many options. The centre is easily reached on foot and is targeted towards families.

Sigikid is mainly known across Germany for their high-quality plush toys, but they also offer fashionable clothes for children and different kinds of toys and child-related accessories. The factory outlet at their home base in Mistelbach offers discounts on remaining stock from past seasons and objects with minor production errors.
Mangiare
Bayreuth's status as a university city means that a wide variety of restaurants populate the city, including typical Franconian Wirtshäuser, pizza parlors and Asian cuisine (including specifically Chinese, Japanese, and Thai), as well as the normal fast food fare in the train station and along the pedestrian streets. Small food stands (Imbiss) dot the pedestrian areas and offer quick hot meals for those in a rush (the traditional Franconian choice would be a pair of Bayreuther Bratwürste). If you're looking for halal food, the numerous Döner places around the city centre are your safest bet. Most of the hotels listed below also have an attached restaurant or Biergarten, open for anyone to visit. Listed below is a small sampling of the restaurants in Bayreuth. Bere
The city centre of Bayreuth has plenty of options for having a pint. Most of them fall into the pub o Wirtshaus categories, though, as the city lost its main dance hall, the (in)famous Rosenau, to a fire in 2017. Below is a list of some of the most well-established places, but don't hesitate to just take a walk around the city and see where that leads you.

Bayreuth's Irish Pub, featuring Irish beer, British cider, a large selection of whisk(e)y (ask for specialities not on the menu) and even some Irish Stew. Occasional live music. Mondays is half-priced drinks, for €3 entrance fee. Otherwise free.
- 2 Glashaus (on the university campus, between the "Geowissenschaften" building and the bus stop of the same name), ☏ 49 921-552198. Run entirely by volunteer university students, the Glashaus is the cultural heart of the campus. During the semester, it is the perfect spot for an afternoon-study break with a mug of fair-trade coffee or tea. In the evening, it turns into a popular location for a wide variety of cultural (an not so cultural) events: concerts (from electro to metal, from reggae to punk), open mic sessions, movies, readings, talks, poetry- and science-slams. You will have to become a member to take part, but that's really just a formality (and a small fee). Membership fee is €1 for a single month, entrance fees depend on the event (may be free).

In a renovated part of the old Maisel's brewery building, the Liebesbier offers a huge selection of regional and international craft beer. It's a bit on the pricey side, but the excellent food and rustic-modern atmosphere easily make up for that.

F Sa 23:00-05:00. If you've been clubbing in Bayreuth before, you might remember this as "Dschäblin's" or "Wunderbar". Apart from the Glashaus, this is probably your best option for dancing in the city. They mostly play Hip Hop and Electro, but also offer some themed events. Entrance fee varies.

The infamous Kanapee is one of the pillars of Bayreuth's nightlife. It's not pretty or anything, but it's inexpensive and open late. Truth being told, you probably won't go there on purpose unless you're looking for a place that plays Rock and Metal. But you may well end up there early in the morning when everything else is closed but you still haven't had enough. Beer from €2.60.
- 7 Tanzcafe San Francisco, Bambergerstr. 27, ☏ 49 921 61141. 20:00-03:00 (may vary). A classic discothèque with moody lighting, dance floor, and a decidedly non-hip name, the San Francisco looks a bit like time has been standing still here since the 1970s. The average age of the guests here is unusually high – in fact the average local twenty-something might not even know it exists. But if you're into actual dancing (fox, swing, salsa …), this might well be the oasis you've been looking for. Each night stands under some kind theme like "Fox Dance Night", "Karaoke Night" or "Classic Rock & Beat Party".
Beer gardens
There are plenty of beer gardens in Bayreuth, some more authentic than others. Many restaurants have attached outdoor seating areas dubbed "Biergarten", but you probably won't get the real deal there. In the beer gardens listed below, however, you will get exactly that – which of course also means that most likely you'll have to get up and walk over to the counter to get your beer! Prices in this section are given for what you'll get when you simply order a beer (which usually results in a Seidla (0.5 L mug) of Helles).
- 8 Vogels Biergarten (Lamperie), Friedrichstr. 13 (enter the gateway next to "Lamperie" and keep walking until you're below the trees), ☏ 49 921 50 70 94 26, ✉[email protected]. April to October: daily from 16:00, if weather permits. Located right in the core of the city behind the pub Lamperie, il Vogels Biergarten is a great choice in the summer. The traditional large conker trees provide some shade and atmosphere when you enjoy a local beer from the Maisel's brewery or a crispy Flammkuchen straight from the oven. Beer: €3.10.
- 9 Herzogkeller, Hindenburgstr. 9 (outside the city centre, just past the brewery), ☏ 49 921-4 34 19. Daily from 16:00, closed during the winter season. Bayreuth's largest Biergarten dates back until 1889. Was built as the Bierkeller of the Bayreuther Bierbrauerei, which today is part of the Maisel's group. Beer €2.90.
- 10 Auf der Theta, Hochtheta 6, 95463 Bindlach (go for a hike northwards through the forest from the Festival Theatre.), ☏ 49 920 865361. Closed from January to mid-March and on May 1st. Located in a former farm house outside town, this is about as traditional as it gets in terms of beer gardens in Bayreuth. In the summer, you'll find an interesting mixture of all kinds of people here: bikers, hikers, families, university students, suits, hippies … They have their own amber colored beer brewed for them by a local brewery not far away. Drinks and cold dishes you'll have to order and pick up yourself at the counter. The choice of hot foods depends on what time it is, what day, what season, but at least they will be brought to your table. If you don't like the heavy Franconian cuisine, maybe try the Flammkuchen or grilled fish from the black kitchen. And yes, of course you may bring your own Brotzeit instead as well.
Dormire
Bayreuth's sleeping options are relatively reasonable in price and quality. During the Richard Wagner Festival prices can go through the roof. The Tourist Information can help you find many other smaller guest houses in and around Bayreuth. (Organized by price in each category.)
Youth hostel
- 1 Bayreuth Youth Hostel (Jugendherberge Bayreuth), Universitätsstr. 28 (south of the city centre, between University and Kreuzsteinbad), ☏ 49 9 21-76 43 80, ✉[email protected]. Bayreuth's Youth Hostel was re-built from the ground up in 2017, paying special attention to the needs of people with handicaps. For example, several wheelchair-friendly rooms are available. As with all DJH hostels, the rate includes a bed (possibly in a dorm room), sheets, and a breakfast. Dinners are also available nightly. Guests over 27 will pay a slight surcharge. The closest bus stop is the Prieserstraße (Bus #310 or 315); Mensa at the University is not too far away either (Bus #304, 306 or 316). From €28.90, DJH membership required.

- 1 City Police (Polizeiinspektion Bayreuth-Stadt), Werner-Siemens-Str. 9, ☏ 49 921 506-0. This is the regular police station you will go to in most cases. The department is responsible for anything that happens within the City of Bayreuth.
- 2 Rural Police (Polizeiinspektion Bayreuth-Land), Ludwig-Thoma-Str. 2, ☏ 49 921 506-2230. This department is responsible for everything that happens outside the core city in the Landkreis Bayreuth (rural district).
- 3 Federal Police (Bundespolizeirevier Bayreuth), Bahnhofstr. 22 (next to the main train station), ☏ 49 921 871106-0. The Federal Police serves as railway police and border security.
Connect
While most of the larger modern hotels offer free Wifi, this is not necessarily true for some of the smaller traditional guest houses. If you're staying in one of these and having a room with internet access is important to you, make sure to check out their website or ask in advance.
The state of Bavaria, in cooperation with Vodafone, offers free Wifi connectivity through about 350 BayernWLAN Hotspots scattered across the city. If you are a student or employee of an institution that uses Eduroam, you'll be able to use this as a safer alternative at the University and some other places around the city (see eduroam map for locations of hot spots).
Vai avanti
Take a trip to the nearby tiny town of Aufsess, which the Guinness Book of World Records recognizes as the town with the most breweries per capita! There's even a beer trail that you can hike with stops at all the local biergartens.
Visit Bamberg to see the medieval town and try the local smoked beer (Rauchbier).
Take an adventure in the Franconian Switzerland (Fränkische Schweiz) or Fichtelgebirge and experience the beautiful local flora, fauna, and scenery. Possible activities include hiking, mountain-climbing and canoeing.
Nuremberg is also nearby, and an easy, exciting day trip.
